Loose skin around the thighs and hips can be bothersome, particularly after significant weight loss. While dieting and exercise are often effective at targeting fat deposits, loose skin won’t respond to these weight loss methods. A more effective solution is thigh lift, a popular body contouring procedure. During thigh lift, Dr. David Horvath removes excess skin (and sometimes fat) and reshapes the inner thigh for a slimmer, more pleasant shape. While the thigh lift is effective to elevate the front and inner aspect of the thigh skin, the outer thigh can also be tightened but requires a standard body lift procedure.
Thigh Lift Candidates
Suitable thigh lift candidates are generally individuals who:
- Are in good physical and psychological health
- Do not smoke
- Do not have a medical condition which could impair healing
- Have specific and realistic goals of surgery
- Desire improvement, not perfection
- Understand the surgical risks and benefits
- Do not plan to gain a significant amount of weight (which could reverse the results of the procedure)
Dr. Horvath will meet with you one-on-one to determine whether the procedure is a good fit for your needs and goals. During your consultation, you will discuss the areas of your thighs that you would like to see improved, and Dr. Horvath will examine the areas, noting the elasticity of your skin and amount of correction necessary. He will also take down a detailed medical history and may ask questions about your lifestyle and health. If you decide to proceed with and schedule surgery, you will receive instructions to help you prepare.
The Thigh Lift Procedure
Thigh lift is performed on an outpatient basis. You will receive anesthesia medications to help you sleep comfortably throughout the procedure.
Dr. Horvath will begin by making discreet incisions in the groin area. Depending on the case, the incision may be limited to the inner groin crease. However, with more extensive skin laxity of the entire front and inner thigh, a vertical incision may be necessary along the inner seam of the thigh down to the knee. Through the incision, Dr. Horvath will remove excess fat (sometimes using liposuction techniques) and reshape/tighten the underlying tissue. He will also excise surplus skin and tighten the remaining skin by re-draping it to hug the new contours of the thigh.
When Dr. Horvath has finished making the surgical modifications, he will close the incisions with sutures and place surgical bandages and a support garment.
Recovering from Thigh Lift
After surgery, the thighs will be sore, swollen and bruised. The compression garment will help to minimize swelling and should be kept in place to support the newly contoured thighs. If you experience any discomfort, you may take prescription pain medication per Dr. Horvath’s recommendations.
Dr. Horvath will provide detailed aftercare instructions that include how to care for the incision, medications to take if you experience any pain, and advice on when to resume normal activities and exercise. He will also follow up with you to check your healing progress and answer any questions you may have.
Thigh Lift Results
After healing from surgery, your thighs will look and feel firmer, and will be more proportional to the rest of your body. Your results will last for many years, as long as your weight remains stable and you follow healthy lifestyle habits.
