facial fat transfer

Facial Fat Grafting in Philadelphia & Montgomery County

One of the universal signs of aging is the descent and loss of normal facial fat. After years of facial muscle movement and exposure to the sun and gravity, the underlying tissue that maintains our full and youthful facial appearance begins to break down. When that occurs, the facial features begin to look wrinkled, creased or sunken-in. Dermal fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane are commonly used to camouflage these changes. Although very successful, dermal fillers can only temporarily replenish volume to facial areas where fat has been lost or displaced.

Dr. David Horvath offers a state-of-the-art, lasting treatment to restore volume to areas that are lacking: fat grafting, or fat transfer, which uses donor fat from another area of the body and transplants it to the face to enhance its youthful, supple quality.

Facial Fat Grafting Candidates

Facial fat grafting candidates are individuals who are healthy (physically and mentally), do not smoke and do not take blood thinners, which could affect the recovery. If you are considering facial fat grafting, you need surplus fat in another area of your body. Most individuals, even if thin, have enough fat to be able to perform this procedure.

It’s also important that you understand what the procedure entails, and the risks and benefits. Highly skilled cosmetic surgeon Dr. Horvath will discuss these topics with you during your surgical consultation. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have, and to be clear and forthcoming about your goals.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Fat transfer is performed on an outpatient basis. Anesthesia is used so you won’t feel any pain during surgery.

First, Dr. Horvath will use special liposuction techniques to harvest surplus fat from an area of your body (usually the abdomen, thighs, or inner knee). This fat will be washed and purified, readying it for injection to the face.

Once the fat has been prepared, Dr. Horvath will inject it into the face to add volume. Tiny specialized needles are used for the injections and there is no need for incisions. The fat may be used to fill in areas of the face that are lacking volume or look wrinkled or creased. The injections can be used to treat:

  • Hollowing in the temples
  • Hollowing under the eyes
  • Sunken-in cheekbones
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Improve the jawline contour
  • Chin dimpling and volume loss
  • Laugh lines
  • Smile lines
  • Lips

The number of injections and amount of fat that Dr. Horvath uses will depend on the degree of correction necessary and your desired results. Repeat injections can also be performed to further enhance volume if necessary.

After Dr. Horvath has finished the injections, there are no incisions to close and only minor bandages are applied the treated area.

Recovery and Results

Dr. Horvath will provide explicit aftercare instructions to follow during the recovery, including how to care for the treated areas, medications to take and when to return to the office for a follow up visit.

Swelling and bruising are common right after surgery and typically last about a week or two. After that, residual swelling or bruising can be concealed with makeup.

One of the primary advantages of fat transfer over dermal filler treatment is that the results last longer. Once the fat establishes a new blood supply in the grafted area, it has a much better chance at survival. The areas in which fat was injected will look soft and full. Also, the area from which the fat was harvested will look slim and toned.
