Facelift Surgery in Philadelphia and Montgomery County
The passage of time can have numerous manifestations, including creases, lines, sagging skin and displaced or lost fat on the face. These signs of aging often occur simultaneously, creating a stressed or aged appearance that may not align with how young you feel on the inside.
Facelift surgery is the only facial rejuvenation procedure to comprehensively reverse signs of aging. By tightening and lifting the underlying facial structures and then re-draping the skin over the face, the surgeon can create a smoother and younger-looking appearance. Dr. David Horvath is a seasoned facial plastic surgeon who has helped hundreds of patients in the Philadelphia area restore a youthful and rested appearance with facelift. He is expertly trained and skilled in performing facelift in order to produce natural-looking results.
Am I a Candidate for Facelift?
Dr. Horvath meets with each patient to determine whether they are an appropriate candidate for facelift surgery. During your consultation, Dr. Horvath will evaluate your facial features and discuss your aesthetic concerns and goals. Using this information, he will devise a facial rejuvenation plan that achieves your desired outcome. In some cases, Dr. Horvath may recommend performing a mini-facelift instead of traditional facelift, or combining facelift with another facial rejuvenation procedure such as eyelid surgery.
Generally, ideal candidates for facelift surgery are those who have one or more of the following:
- Wrinkles, lines and creases on the middle and lower portions of the face, including the cheeks, the area below the lower eyelids, and around the nose and mouth
- Loose, sagging skin on the middle and lower facial areas, and neck
- Loss of healthy skin tone
- Excess fat on the jawline and underneath the chin
- Loss of facial volume
Traditional facelift is performed on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Horvath will create small incisions strategically placed along the inside of the hairline that continue down and around the ears. Through these incisions, he will remove excess fat and skin and reposition fat to create a more balanced appearance. The underlying muscles are tightened and the remaining skin is pulled taut. Dr. Horvath is careful to lift the skin to create a smooth yet not “overly pulled” look.
Patients with mild to moderate signs of facial aging may be better candidates for a mini-facelift. This variation of the procedure involves creating shorter incisions at the temples that continue down around the ear. The subcutaneous layers and neck muscles are tightened, excess skin is removed and the overlying skin is re-draped and lifted.
“It is so exciting to see how evidence-based scientific studies have shown us that some of the techniques we believed to be helpful in the past were actually contradictory to natural youth,” says Dr. Horvath. “Revolumizing the face with fat grafting during facelift surgery is one of those exciting developments that has revolutionized the natural appearance and in many cases reduced the amount of surgical work necessary.”
As patients age, it is common for fat to become lost or displaced and therefore we may choose to restore a round and youthful appearance with fat grafting. This technique involves injecting the patient’s own fat into the face to restore volume to sunken or hollow facial areas including the cheeks and the area below the lower eyelids. Fat grafting is also used to fill in facial wrinkles and creases. During fat grafting, fat is removed from the donor area (typically the abdomen, back, thighs or buttocks) via liposuction techniques. The fat is harvested and purified before it is re-injected into the face. Dr. Horvath will inject the fat in small amounts to create a natural-looking and sculpted appearance.
While dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are also used to add fullness to the face, they are non-surgical and are used to camouflage the actual changes of volume loss. Fat grafting, however, is placed into the natural layer of facial fat and can be used in areas fillers cannot. Also, results from fat grafting typically last longer.
Recovery and Results
Following facelift, you may experience swelling, bruising and soreness. This is temporary and should dissipate after a few days. Dr. Horvath will provide you with a detailed list of instructions to follow during your recovery. The initial recovery period typically takes one to two weeks, depending on the patient’s personal healing process.
Once your final facelift results become visible, you will notice a youthful and well-rested overall facial appearance. When performed by an expert plastic surgeon like Dr. Horvath, a facelift can take 10 to 15 years off a person’s appearance. Healthy lifestyle habits like sun protection, not smoking and moisturizing regularly can help prolong your results. Dr. Horvath and his nurse practitioner, Kelly Lappa, will help prepare your skin with the best skin care and provide perioperative arnica to ensure faster healing and healthier skin appearance after surgery. Botox and dermal fillers are also a great way to maintain your younger-looking appearance.
